At one point, Thich Nhat Hanh--a Buddhist monk--refers to the practice of meditation not only as a way to experience a contented state of mind or release from worry, but also as a way to prepare for suffering. His 34 exercises achieve different goals: a joyful spirit, inner strength, and acceptance of the transitory nature of life are some inducements to practice the techniques set forth. Thich Nhat Hanh briefly describes methods to aid in undertaking these meditation exercises, and his gentle guidance should appeal both to newcomers and to those experienced in meditating but on the lookout for a new direction. This little book offers an inspirational respite from the treadmill of daily life. ~--Alice Joyce
