What do Iowa, Beaux-Arts courthouses, grain elevators, and log cabins have in common? Answer: Buildings of Iowa, another entry in the "Buildings of the United States" series begun in 1986 by the Society of Architectural Historians, which attempts to feature just the high points in each state as a guidebook/reference book with maps and information regarding access to the site. Despite being short on in-depth information on each structure, the books themselves are somewhat large to serve as guidebooks, and the photographs small. The introduction to the present volume gives an excellent overview of the beginnings of architecture in Iowa; and the notes, suggested readings, photographs, and glossary make this and each other book in the series a valuable research tool. Libraries serving architectural historians and others interested in the geography and history of the US should have the entire series. Lower-division undergraduate through professional. G. F.
