Stories of sexual abuse are ugly and shocking, and acknowledging even one incident is difficult for everyone involved, including readers. Fredrickson's counseling experience informs her calm persistence in handling this material, alternately persuading and supporting victims. She shows how each tortured party cooperates in hiding the truth, then how painful secrets from the past have been recovered by careful observation and informed inquiry. More important, Fredrickson demonstrates that the benefit gained from the always painful release of hidden trauma outweighs even the most heinous abuse. Many techniques exist to reach and defuse repressed memories, arming victims with weapons to fight the confusion, rage, and depression that follow sexual abuse. A realistic appraisal of offenders and "deniers," this paperback lends support to victims, families, and friends. Intended as a practical guide, it includes references, procedures, and even cautious guidance for nonprofessional assistance. ~--Virginia Dwyer
