Review by Kirkus Book Review

In the first complete one-volume edition of Wells's stories, Hammond (president of the H.G. Wells Society) offers 84 tales by the titan of science fiction. Twenty-two are previously uncollected, and the well-known 'Country of the Blind' is a revision. Recovering from illness and a-bubble with literary invention, Wells (1866'1946) wrote these pieces largely for turn-of-the-century gazettes, but they still remain readable and clear, their prose free of the clich‚s of the day. Wonder was the keynote to Wells's scientific romances, he himself having been trained in biology and other sciences. 'The Apple' asks us how we'd like to have a literal apple from the Tree of Knowledge. (Remember what happened last time.) 'The Queer Story of Brownlow's Newspaper' uses the oft-repeated plot that turns on a newspaper from tomorrow, this one from 40 years in the future. Wells's entertainments, Hammond explains, always intended to stimulate thought in ordinary people, being 'designed to . . . suggest possibilities of behavior and to alert the reader to the immense role of chance in human affairs.' And here indeed are flying machines, flying men, undersea civilizations, tales of space and time, folks who float on the ceiling, even a journey to fairyland'yet often these are stories also that show ordinary humans in amusing situations, these alone intriguing to the imagination. Here too are the marvelous 'The Man Who Could Work Miracles,' 'The Star,' 'A Dream of Armageddon,' and 'The Door in the Wall.' A compendium that belongs in every library.
