Seen here are glimpses of the life of a Heisman Trophy winner (1939), politically sensitive celebrity, and budding naval flier. We follow clearly the progression of a college sports hero and honor student from confusion over his career choice to the life of a Navy pilot in training. The story ends in June 1943 with Kinnick's death in a training accident before being in combat. Baender has done an excellent editing job, providing context and notes to construct a human portrait of this scion of prominent Iowa families.
