The instructor

T. R. Hendricks

Book - 2023

"Derek Harrington, retired Marine Force Recon and SERE instructor, is barely scraping by teaching the basics of wilderness survival. His fledgling bushcraft school is on the cusp of going out of business and expenses are piling up fast. His only true mission these days? To get his ailing father into a full care facility and to support his ex-wife and their son. When one of his students presents him with an opportunity too good to be true-$20,000 to instruct a private group for 30 days in upstate New York-Derek reluctantly takes the job, despite his reservations about the group's insistence on anonymity. But it isn't long before the training takes an unexpected turn-and a new offer is made. Reaching out to an FBI contact to so...und his concerns, Derek soon finds himself in deep cover, deep in the woods, embroiled with a fringe group led by a charismatic leader who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. When what he wants becomes Derek's head, the teacher is pitted against his students as Derek races against time to stop what could very well be the first attack of a domestic terrorist cell." --

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Former Marine trainer Derek Harrington, the hero of Hendricks's hard-driving debut and series launch, has been offered $50,000 by Marshal, the evangelical leader of Sanctuary, a mysterious religious group in the wilderness of Upstate New York, to teach its members the strategy of SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, and escape). Since retiring from the Marines, Derek's struggling bushcraft school has barely made enough to keep him alive, let alone pay for child support and his ailing father's care facility. After seeing how much weaponry Sanctuary has amassed at its backwoods compound, Derek touches base with the FBI, which agrees to use him as an undercover agent investigating domestic terrorism. Once on the job, Derek gains the grudging respect of his trainees, but as an outsider, he's never free from suspicion. As the brutal training progresses, Derek slips up one too many times, revealing his true purpose, and he has to scramble for his life. Hendricks, a former Army captain and intelligence officer, brings authenticity to this dip into the world of survivalist fringe culture, though readers should be prepared for a predictable plot and stock characters. Military action fans will find much to like. Agent: Irene Poelle, Irene Goodman Literary. (Apr.)
