It is always fun to see how best-selling authors began their writing careers, and fans of romantic suspense star Gerritsen will certainly enjoy this 1990 title. Dr. Kate Chesne can't figure out how a patient died under her care, for the careful and thorough anesthesiologist does not make careless mistakes. David Ransom has gained a reputation with medical malpractice cases and believes this one is airtight until Dr. Chesne demands to speak to him to defend herself. Kate resists pressure to quit her job and finds the body of another colleague after receiving a mysterious message. Then someone tries to kill her, and David begins to fall in love with the feisty doctor as he joins her in the now urgent investigation. Vivid medical details add a taut edge to the suspenseful and twisting tale. Gerritsen's smart protagonist leads the fight for justice amid lots of action and discovers love in the midst of it all. Always skillful and entertaining, Gerritsen's memorable and enjoyable tale will remind readers of exactly why she remains so very popular.--Alessio, Amy Copyright 2014 Booklist

Melodrama and logical flaws slay this tale of murder and yuppie love. Gerritsen ( A Call After Midnight ) gets off to a flying start with a death during routine surgery. Although medical records suggest the patient died due to an error by anesthesiologist Kate Chesne,sp ok/pk who is sued for malpractice, she persuades David Ransom, lawyer for the victim's parents, that the records are suspect. Together they discover that the ``accident'' is one of a series of murders. Fortunately for the protagonists, the killer, who has efficiently cut the throats of two other victims and fractured the skull of a third, decides for no convincing reason to indulge in an elaborate frame-up that could easily fail. Characters are also inconsistent: in the beginning David plans to ``expose'' and ``destroy'' Kate, but tells her a few pages later that he doesn't attack doctors, only their mistakes. The lovers' squabbling and passion never rise above romance formula; even the author characterizes one of her scenes as ``a tableau taken straight out of some soap opera.'' (Apr.) An anesthesiologist unfairly blamed for a patient's death is drawn to the doctor-hating attorney who is litigating the case against the hospital in this complex, danger-filled, Honolulu-set romance that will keep fans on edge and off balance as the bodies mount up and the clever plot unfolds. First published as a Harlequin Intrigue in 1990, this taut, suspenseful tale still has the power to surprise and is among the popular suspense author's earliest works. (c) Copyright 2014.
