The last waltz

Mary Balogh

eBook - 2020

Gerard Percy, the new Earl of Wanstead, dreads returning home to Thornwood, where the widow of his predecessor lives with her two children. He has unhappy memories of Christina, the widowed countess. But it is Christmas, and he decides to take a houseful of guests with him to make his return easier. For her part, Christina feels an equal dread of seeing Gerard again, ten years after she renounced him in order to marry his strict, puritanical-but seemingly safe-cousin. She is horrified when she learns about the guests and the fact that Christmas this year is to be a bright and merry occasion, for her late husband would allow no frivolity of any kind in their life. And so they meet again, these two former lovers who have bitterly resented eac...h other for ten years-but never forgotten each other.

Review by Library Journal Review

Similar to several of Balogh's earlier Christmas Regencies (A Christmas Bride, LJ 11/15/97) and equally rewarding, this exquisitely rendered tale reunites former lovers at the holiday season and, in Balogh's typical cutting-edge fashion, forces them to deal with major issues (abuse, alcoholism) before they find happiness together. Realistic, exceptionally well-developed characters populate this emotionally involving story that is a bit darker and more overtly sensual than the average Regency; readers will be waiting for it. Balogh is a noted writer of both Regency and historical romances and lives in Saskatchewan, Canada. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
