Ruby red herring

Tracy Gardner

eBook - 2021

After her parents' deaths, Avery Ayers takes over the family business, Antiquities & Artifacts Appraised, from the home office in Lilac Grove and a branch in Manhattan. Now living back at home with her younger sister Tilly and their newly moved-in, eccentric Aunt Midge and her Afghan hound, Avery's life is filled with jewels, tapestries, paintings, and rare finds. But, their world is rocked when Avery learns that the theft of a priceless ruby may be connected to her parents' demise. The trouble starts when the Museum of Antiquities hires Avery to appraise a rare, resplendent ruby. It bears a striking similarity to a solitary stone in the museum's prized Xiang Dynasty bejeweled dragon medallion exhibit, which has long... been missing one of its ruby eyes. Now, Avery and her colleagues, ostentatious Sir Robert Lane and fatherly Micah Abbott, suspect they may have the missing gem. But, facets of the case remain cloudy. Security guard Art Smith is always underfoot but is not what he appears. Another body turns up connected to the appraisal. And, Avery receives mysterious notes that begin to put her life in danger. Avery enlists possible ally Art's help in cutting the list of suspects who might have polished off her parents and swiped the jewel. Was it art collector Oliver Renell? Curator Nate Brennan? Acquisitions Liaison Francesca Giolitti? Actor Tyler Chadwick? Was the crime impersonal or perpetrated by someone all too close to Avery? If she can't find the culprit, lovely Lilac Grove may be the setting for Avery's own death.

After her parents' tragic deaths in a car accident, Avery Ayers takes over their business, Antiquities & Artifacts Appraised, and her aunt moves in with Avery and her high-school-age sister. A year later, the New York Museum of Antiquities hires the firm to authenticate a large ruby the museum hopes to acquire. Avery immediately notices that the ruby could be the missing eye of the dragon in a medallion the museum already owns. Avery receives cryptic messages warning her to abandon the job, and documents are stolen from her home. When Avery learns her parents authenticated the medallion just before their deaths and finds some anomalies in the paperwork regarding it, she works with the detective who investigated her parents' accident to unravel the threads connecting the mysteries. Fast pacing, numerous plot twists, and richly developed characters evoking the loving relationships between Avery and her family, along with details of authenticating jewels, all contribute to the appeal of this engaging cozy, the first in a series, which will draw fans of Jane K. Cleland's Josie Prescott novels.

A fabulous gemstone is a magnet for murder. In a rousing series debut, Gardner introduces 25-year-old Avery Ayers and her sister, Tilly, a high school senior, who are still recovering from the deaths of their parents in a car accident almost a year ago. While their Aunt Midge is sharing their suburban New York home, they also use her apartment in Manhattan, where Avery has taken her parents' place at their art and antiques appraisal business. When a note in their father's handwriting is slipped through their mail slot, they're all deeply disturbed. The note says, "You must decline the contract. Your life is at stake." The note may refer to a job Avery is planning to start that day, authenticating a stone for the Museum of Antiquities. The stone, owned by a reclusive man who claims to have found it at a flea market in Munich, may be a priceless ruby or a much less expensive spinel--and it might even be a famously missing ruby from the museum's most important piece, the Emperor's Twins medallion. Avery discovers that her parents had worked on authenticating the remaining ruby eye in the Emperor's Twins medallion just before their deaths and notices odd things such as the fact that the case of her parents' deaths has not been closed by the police. Avery receives another mysterious note telling her to find someone named Art at the museum. Art Smith turns out to be a remarkably closemouthed police detective masquerading as one of the guards protecting the gem. After searching through the papers her parents stored at home, Avery is attacked and her aunt's dog injured by a violent intruder. Now she can only trust her family and the attractive detective as they work to solve the puzzle of the ruby and discover who is willing to kill for it. A lively combination of mystery, romance, and gemology that will appeal to fans of Jane K. Cleland and Paige Shelton. Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
