eBook - 1987

With over fifty graphic novels in print, the samurai rabbit is more popular than ever! This is the seminal Usagi book collecting all the classic original Usagi stories from Albedo, Critters, Doomsday Squad, and the Usagi Yojimbo Summer Special. This is one of our very best sellers, and is also where Usagi started - don't miss out! The setting is 17th century Japan, when the age of civil wars has barely ended and the Shogun has established power. The samurai is the ruling class throughout the land, following a warrior's code of honor known as Bushido. Usagi Yojimbo Vol. 1 chronicles this time of settling unrest and political intrigue, told through the story of a wandering and masterless samurai named Miyamoto Usagi, aka Usagi Yojim...bo! One of the great classics of the last 20 years, perfect for all ages.

Review by Booklist Review

Comics fans will relish this collection of the adventures of masterless Samurai, Miyamoto Usagi, a ``ronin'' rabbit, who, ears bound to keep from flopping, slashes his way across seventeenth-century Japan, righting wrongs as a have-sword-will-travel so he can ``eat something besides cheap noodles'' for a change. With numerous jabs, zaps, and ``hyaas,'' he single-handedly dispatches dozens of assassins and unmasks evil monsters, still having time to reminisce about a lost rabbit love and to be gullible enough to get stuck with the bill for his boss' lunch. Sakai's crisply drawn black-and-white illustrations abound with small, deliberate details: squinty-eyed snakes, sweet-faced pandas, and scruffy pigs (and even a person and a dinosaur or two) dressed in traditional garb charge expressively across the pages, begging for imaginative involvement. Teenagers will easily succumb to Sakai's clever brand of visual humor, especially if they are looking for a bit of uncomplicated fun. Gr. 9-12. SZ. 741.5'973 Comic books, strips, etc.-U.S.
