Ozy and Millie

Dana Simpson, 1977-

eBook - 2018

Meet Ozy and Millie, two middle-grade students in Seattle who also happen to be foxes. This debut comic from Phoebe and Her Unicorn creator Dana Simpson centers around these two best friends as they take on the everyday challenges all middle-graders face-bullies, tests, and the dread of going back to school after a surprise snow day. Millie is a mischievous and inquisitive 10-year-old with a talent for evading homework, a habit of questioning authority, and a knack for inventing bizarre jump rope rhymes. Ozy is her calm, thoughtful counterpart, whose adoptive father, a red dragon named Llewellyn, is full of odd stories and ancient wisdom. Also featured are Felicia, a sheep at the head of the cool clique, and Avery, a hapless raccoon who des...perately wants to be popular. Together they offer charming and fun stories while also allowing Simpson's sweetly philosophical humor to shine through. Evocative, funny, and gently philosophical, Ozy and MIllie will delight young readers with tales of friendship and school-age fun, while transporting older fans back to the honesty, openness and wonder of childhood.

Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-A greatest hits collection of the Ozy and Millie webcomic, which ran for 10 years. Simpson notes that she chose these strips to show a young audience how artists improve over time and that mistakes lead to learning. Representing the entire span of the series, selections have been carefully reviewed to ensure they don't contain dated references. Four-panel, full-color strips center on Ozy and Millie, anthropomorphic foxes who are best friends and complete opposites. While the humor is appropriate for middle graders, the book runs more to adult tastes, owing to the advanced vocabulary and phrasing and references to historical figures and concepts, though a glossary will help younger readers. VERDICT Not for all readers, but those maturing out of Simpson's "Phoebe and Her Unicorn" series may appreciate this offering.-Samantha Lumetta, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OHElementary © Copyright 2018.
