*Starred Review* A full-cast recording of Neil Gaiman's multi-award-winning novel brings rich new dimensions to this riveting tale. Acclaimed actor Jacobi's narration smoothly elicits every nuance of emotion in the complex plot and blends seamlessly with the dialogue performed by a gifted ensemble who bring each character fully to life, including the dead ones. Young Robert Madge, already a stage veteran, is especially noteworthy as Nobody Owens, his voice subtly changing as the boy grows from toddler to child to teenager, reflecting all the delight, anger, and confusion of his situation. Julian Rhind-Tutt fully embodies the character of the mysterious Silas; he is chilling and comforting at the same time, emphasizing the otherworldliness of Bod's guardian as well as his devotion to the boy. As Scarlett, Bod's live playmate as a child, Clare Corbett is beguiling, and when the character returns in later chapters after 10 years in Glasgow, her Scottish accent and teenage angst are perfectly portrayed. Andrew Scott as the evil Man Jack and Reece Shearsmith as the supernatural Sleer are both deliciously chilling. The author himself appears, fittingly, in a cameo role as the graveyard's resident poet. In a bonus track, Gaiman relates how the story grew in his imagination over the course of many years and reveals a tantalizing connection between one of the graveyard denizens and a family in his latest novel for adults. This is a thoroughly enjoyable listen for all ages. Grades 6-10. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.

Gr 5 Up—Gaiman's beloved novel gets the full-cast treatment in this new audio edition. Due to ghastly circumstances, the ghosts of a graveyard take in a young toddler whom they name Nobody, or Bod for short. The enigmatic Silas becomes Bod's guardian and makes it his duty to protect the boy from those who intend harm. Bod grows up in the graveyard, and although he is still alive, the Freedom of the Graveyard allows him to see in darkness, fade from view, and slide through walls. As he matures, Bod encounters ghouls, a werewolf, and a witch, but none as terrifying as the man who killed his family and now wishes him dead—Jack. For the first time, listeners can hear the music of the Danse Macabre, the slithering echo of the Sleer, and the transformation of Bod from inquisitive child to self-assured young man. The full cast, including Gaiman, skillfully depicts each character's unique traits and idiosyncrasies. Listeners will also hear some background on the book, read by the author himself, and music by Béla Fleck. A must-have for fans of the original novel and anyone who enjoys engaging fantasy.—Amanda Spino, Ocean County Library, NJ [Page 78]. (c) Copyright 2014.
