Review by Booklist Review

Furhman, a family physician and author of such best-sellers as The End of Dieting (2015) and Eat to Live (2011), enthusiastically and knowledgeably makes the case that eating healthier trumps taking drugs when it comes to preventing heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S. He calls his plant-filled, nutrient-rich regimen a nutritarian approach. Though he mentions the importance of getting enough sleep, exercising, and not smoking, he focuses on changing the standard American diet (SAD), which he also calls the deadly American diet (DAD). His favorite foods include kale and collard greens, walnuts, mushrooms, berries, and seeds. (The more you eat green, the more lifespan you glean.) He takes on the pharma-centric attitude of many doctors, who, in his view, too readily prescribe cholesterol-lowering statins that may increase weight gain and blood-pressure-lowering medications that may not increase longevity. Sometimes he goes overboard: mainstream readers may not be interested in an anatomy of an artichoke. Still, it's obvious Furhman's zeal is genuine as he passionately tries to convince the general public to make smarter choices.--Springen, Karen Copyright 2016 Booklist
