Following a whirlwind romance with an old acquaintance she bumped into at a high-school reunion, pregnant Dena Russell has moved back to her small hometown to start a new life with horse breeder Brian Riley. But something isn't right. As Brian's behavior grows increasingly disturbing, Dena flees her new home, finding refuge with an old school friend. Then the bloodstained, battered body is found, and Dena is forced to think the unthinkable: Could the father of her unborn child be a coldblooded killer? And, if so, how can she and her baby escape his clutches?

Dena Russell knew that her boyfriend, Brian, was the jealous type, but she never imagined he would raise his hand to a pregnant woman until the moment she found herself sitting alone in an emergency room, wondering where she would spend the night. She calls an old friend she ran into at a childbirth class. Jennifer and her husband, Ron, are only too happy to help Dena, especially when Jennifer realizes that Dena's abuser is the same man who was dating her sister when she died under mysterious circumstances. When Jennifer is murdered, her husband is the prime suspect. But Brian's escalating harassment of Dena makes him impossible to ignore. A police cover-up and a too-good-to-be-true single-dad coworker add to the layers of manipulation and deceit in this domestic thriller. Though Dena is a somewhat unremarkable heroine, fans of MacDonald's many suspense novels (including The Girl in the Woods, 2018) will want the latest from this Edgar-nominated author.--Karen Keefe Copyright 2019 Booklist

Pastry chef Dena Russell, the protagonist of this overstuffed domestic thriller from MacDonald (The Girl in the Woods), has reason to regret moving in with stable owner Brian Riley, a former schoolmate, by whom she's become pregnant despite precautions, in her hometown of Monroe, Pa. As the months pass, Brian becomes increasingly possessive and violent. When he discovers her packing up to leave him, the full magnitude of his fury is unleashed, and the incident ends with Dena cowering in the locked bathroom and calling the police. Since the police chief is a good friend of Brian's ailing father, and the officer who responds to her call was on the high school football team with Brian, no charges are brought against him. Rumors start to surface about the death of Brian's former live-in girlfriend. Was it really an accident? Then things really heat up for the now heavily pregnant Dena, and it's not just Brian she has to worry about. Kidnapping, torture, and murder also figure into this busy tale's relentless, made-for-TV-movie plot. Agent: Meg Ruley, Jane Rotrosen Agency. (Mar.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
