PreS-Gr 2-This is the story of Daisy, a donkey, and of how she grew older and became the one others turned to for help and advice. Daisy was born near a meadow full of daisies and that's how she came about her name. She was an important part of the family: she helped to bring the firewood, played with the children, and at night kept an ear out for the wolf. She was also friendly with all the animals in the farm. As the years went by and Daisy got older she could no longer do many of the things she did before. One day a beautiful young pony arrived at the farm and soon was taking on many of the donkey's jobs. "Daisy looked on from a corner of the farmyard, forgotten by everyone." When an accident happens and the animals are in trouble, it is Daisy's wise counsel that saves the day. The full-bleed illustrations are realistic with a touch of whimsy, colorful, and vibrant, adding further dimension to the story. The message of the value of experience and the wisdom acquired through time is gently delivered. The English edition is published in tandem with Margarito, the original book written in Spanish, in which Daisy is a male donkey. VERDICT Recommended for most picture book collections for one-on-one or small group sharing.-Lucia Acosta, Children's Literature Specialist, Princeton, NJ © Copyright 2017.
