Review by Booklist Reviews

From her original adults-only comic to her Netflix show, Jessica Jones has proven herself Marvel's most compelling second-tier character. A traumatized former superhero turned private investigator whose penchant for ornery, self-destructive behavior is matched by courage, empathy, and street-smart know-how makes her impossible not to root for. The new series, launched with Marvel's Netflix properties very much in mind, reunites the original creators and brings Jessica up against the case of a missing husband who hasn't disappeared, a kidnapper with a grudge against superheroes, and her own superpowered husband, Luke Cage, from whom she has shockingly hidden their baby. Bendis still proves adept at grippingly capturing the psyche of a struggling human being as well as incisively conjuring the pressures that alternate dimensions and superhero conspiracies might exert on such a psyche. Gaydos brings harsh reality to it all with deeply human faces and ground-level action whose effort and consequence you can nearly feel. Crucial as well are the grunge and seaminess suggested by Matt Hollingsworth's palette of decidedly unheroic colors. Copyright 2017 Booklist Reviews.
