In the golden age of comics, superheroes were flawless and pristine, but here, Millar reimagines them as something much more human. With obvious nods to DC's popular Justice League, each of the book's three segments focuses on a different member of the superpowered team and the issues they face. Millar does a great job getting into the heads of the heroes and referencing the source material even the union's headquarters mirrors the JL's old Hall of Justice. The biggest drawback is that chapters often wrap up a bit too cleanly. The story of the Flare (a parody of the Flash) leaving his wife and family for a young superheroine builds great tension and character yet ends with him and his family very conveniently reconciling. Torres and Gianfelice's artwork perfectly mirrors old golden-age comics, with square jaws and thin inking, and an old-fashioned color palette adds to the vintage feel. Fans of Kyle Higgins and Alec Siegel's C.O.W.L. (2014) or other, similar takes on golden-age comics heroes will find familiar territory here.--Blenski, Peter Copyright 2016 Booklist
