PreS-Gr 2-Readers are invited along on a fun road trip as a boy introduces his family members and their stuffed animals. And since some of them are quite large, part of the story's charm is the way they are accommodated on this journey. The title opens with "My daddy has an elephant/He got when he was three./It travels with us everywhere./It's quite a sight to see!" Although the car looks full, readers next see the narrator giving a giant teddy bear a piggyback ride. They squeeze into the back of the station wagon, and their luggage rides on top. Then his large extended family begin to pile into the car. Riders include his sister, brother, cousin, uncle, auntie, grandma, and grandpa and even the family dog. The trip ends with a visit to see Mommy and the twin baby brothers (and identical brand-new polar bears). Large, colorful illustrations are perfectly suited to group sharing. This is a road trip that many will want to take. VERDICT A solid choice for library collections.-Robin Sofge, Alexandria Library, VA © Copyright 2016. A boy and his dad go on a mysterious car ride, gathering relatives and their (unusual) pets along the way; a back-of-book gatefold reveals their destination, where Mommy awaits: "And just why have we come here? / To meet my baby brothers!" Despite the rhymes' disruptive quirks, inviting art with cartoony rounded contours and textured interiors helps make the ride a pleasure. (c) Copyright 2017. A young boy describes all the animal pals his family members have. With bouncing rhymes that sometimes miss the rhythm, the narrator introduces readers to each member of his extended (and all-white) family and his or her animal buddy as they pile into an increasingly crowded old-fashioned station wagon. Dad has an elephant, the narrator has a brown bear, his sister's friend's a whale, and brother has a purple dino. Already pretty stuffed, the car somehow manages to fit, one by one, an aunt, an uncle, a cousin, Grandma, Grandpa, and the family dog, all of whom add animals of their own (even the dog has one: a puppy). "Look! My cousin's kangaroo / Has a switch that makes it hop. / Perhaps the switch is broken / The hopping just won't stop!" Observant readers with two-parent families may notice who is missing and guess the reason, especially with the addition of two polar bear cubs along the way, but as to why they are meeting in what looks like a park, there is no clue. Dodd's pen-and-ink-and-Photoshop artwork is marked by her usual round faces, black outlines, and bright colors. Adults may keep waiting for the punch line that all the animals are stuffed (especially considering that dino and the whale), but it never comes. A very odd book indeed.
