Review by Booklist Review

From the Community Workers and Their Tools series, this book introduces construction as a career by looking at the workers' tools, equipment, and protective clothing. The two-page chapters focus on topics such as power tools, digging, measuring, and cutting. While the writing is competent, the level of information is spotty. For instance, the back-to-basics description of a hammer's physical appearance and use seems to assume no prior knowledge, while the power drill is mentioned as a tool for driving screws, without pointing out that it can also drill holes. Typically, a couple of paragraphs of text and one or two small photos appear on each left-hand page, facing a captioned full-page photo. These full-color illustrations include women and minority workers in the shop and on job sites. A workable volume for larger collections.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2015 Booklist

Gr 2-4-With its clean, uncluttered design and vibrant photos, this series provides students with an informative look at those who serve the community. Emphasizing what these people wear and the physical tools they use, as well as the work environment, each book sheds light on the various aspects of the job while demonstrating its importance to the community. A white, blue, and yellow color scheme results in a crisp look, while vibrant full-page photo spreads afford readers an up-close look at professionals at work. Sidebars such as "Tool Time!" further explain images while building upon children's existing knowledge. A visual recap of the tools is appended and all are clearly labeled. Although there is no additional content, students are directed to the publisher's website for further information and resources. VERDICT A suitable supplemental purchase. © Copyright 2015.
