Review by Booklist Review

This colorful book introduces 10 groups of animals and their collective nouns, such as a colony of Atlantic puffins, a raft of sea otters, a celebration of polar bears, and a flight of monarch butterflies. A large, intriguing photo of an animal group fills each double-page spread, with the group-noun heading, a short paragraph of information, and a small fast-fact box superimposed on the picture. In the back matter, Esbaum lists 27 more animals along with one, two, or three group names for each and asks readers to decide which names best fit the species. In addition, she clarifies that these animal group names are not scientific or official but made up by individuals. Illustrated children's books celebrating the creative names used for animal groups have grown so numerous in recent years that we may soon need a collective noun for the books themselves. Meanwhile, the many eye-catching photos in this volume help it stand out from the crowd, and the brief, accessible informational content is engaging as well.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2016 Booklist

Each of ten double-page spreads features a dynamic nature photograph of a group of animals. The collective noun (e.g., "Coalition of cheetahs") is accompanied by a breezy paragraph about behavior, environment, or appearance. Two additional facts are featured in "Did you know?" text boxes. More animal facts are appended, along with group names for twenty-seven other animals, a mini quiz, and a map. Reading list. Glos. (c) Copyright 2016.
