Red Rosa A graphic biography of Rosa Luxemburg

Kate Evans, 1972-

Book - 2015

"A giant of the political left, Rosa Luxemburg is one of the foremost minds in the canon of revolutionary socialist thought. But she was much more than just a thinker. She made herself heard in a world inimical to the voices of strong-willed women. She overcame physical infirmity and the prejudice she faced as a Jew to become an active revolutionary whose philosophy enriched every corner of an incredibly productive and creative life--her many friendships, her sexual intimacies, and her love of science, nature and art." --

Brilliant economist, charismatic speaker, anticapitalist revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg was an outspoken member of the socialist movement in Europe and a representative of Germany's Social Democratic Party. In this graphic biography, Evans follows Luxemburg's life from her early childhood in Poland, where she was introduced to the works of Karl Marx, through her years as a radical leftist and fervent believer in Social Democracy, to her assassination, in 1919, during the German Revolution. Extensive passages from her letters, books, and other writings illustrate her actions and help define her political philosophy, making the book as much an explanation of socialist theory as it is a biography. Evans' black-and-white art is full of movement and emotion, despite being a book featuring talking heads, and her storytelling is a clever mix of humor, pathos, politics, and the horrors of war. Published in collaboration with the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung-New York Office, the story definitely leans to the left, but that doesn't detract from this compelling account of a strong, independent woman who never deviated from her beliefs.--Volin, Eva Copyright 2015 Booklist

Polish Jewish socialist Rosa Luxemburg (1871-1919) wanted to "affect people like a clap of thunder." Unfortunately, the thunder of World War I militarism hindered -Luxemburg's incisive critiques of capitalism and Marxist theory from getting the hearing they deserved. Considered so dangerous by militarists for her antiwar activism that she was ultimately assassinated, "Frau doktor" Luxemburg and her work found readers in the United States during the 1960s but has since attracted less attention. Recent financial upheavals worldwide reveal her ideas as still insightful. Evans's skill at supple black/grayscale caricature makes the numerous talking-head panels appealing, which are intercut with smoky panoramas of rebellion and war. These contrast with the -charming and frank portrayals of Luxemburg's erotic life with fellow activists. -VERDICT -Revolutionary in her intellect, viewpoints, and sociosexual life, Luxemburg more than earns her place among women of the past century whose acts were precedent-shattering. -Essential for readers interested in economic thought and women's issues, adult through high school, together with Sharon Rudahl et al.'s A Dangerous Woman: The Graphic -Biography of Emma Goldman and Peter Bagge's Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story.-M.C. © Copyright 2016.
