In the vein of Julie Richardson's Vintage Cakes and Linda Hinton Brown and Norrinda Brown Hayat's The Brown Betty Cookbook comes a new collection of nostalgic desserts inspired by treasured family recipes. Adams, creator of food blog Grandbaby Cakes (grandbaby-cakes.com), inherited a passion for cakes and baking from Big Mama, her grandmother. Her debut cookbook comprises 50 cakes of all kinds (e.g., pound cakes, layer cakes, sheet cakes, cupcakes, ice cream cakes), but it's her inventive reinterpretations of Southern classics, such as pineapple upside-down hummingbird pound cake and `nana pudding tiramisu cake, that truly shine. Family memories and photographs accompany the recipes, which are ranked from easy ("Grandbaby Cakes") to hard ("Big Mama Cakes"). VERDICT Adams's cake recipes are familiar yet unlike any you'll find in similar cookbooks. An instant classic, this title belongs in most baking collections. © Copyright 2015.
