Whimsical is the first word that comes to mind upon looking through this collection of animal-themed embroidery projects and motifs designed by Johanson, creator of the popular embroidery blog Wild Olive. The projects are beginner-friendly, using basic embroidery stitches and simple designs stitched as outlines. There are two types of projects in the collection: sewn items (often stuffed toys) embellished with embroidery, and embroidery motifs used as decoration on premade items such as clothing or tote bags. Each project contains easy-to-follow instructions for any sewing involved, and the motif collection includes full-color photographs of the finished pattern, as well as a traceable black-and-white line drawn version. Motifs can be mixed and matched as needed, allowing stitchers to choose their own animals to use as ornaments on many of the projects. A guide to basic embroidery stitches, transfer methods, and supplies is included. VERDICT Embroidery continues to increase in popularity among contemporary crafters, and these projects will appeal to those sewing for children—and to young-at-heart crafters who enjoy cute critters.
