When Nameless, the venerable, now semiretired San Francisco PI, receives a call from a former lover asking for his assistance, he's off to the small mining town of Mineral Springs, Nevada. Cheryl Hatcher's son, Cody, has been accused of three rapes. The evidence is circumstantial—none of the victims can identify their assailant—but Cody, known in the small town as a "bad" kid, doesn't have an alibi and fits a vague profile of the attacker. He is being held in jail by a seemingly dogmatic sheriff, with whom Nameless gets off to a bad start. The sheriff doesn't impede Nameless' investigation, but he keeps an eye on it. The proof that Cody isn't a rapist may necessitate revealing his participation in another criminal enterprise, but Nameless goes where the questions take him. As he moves closer to solving the case, he also realizes Cheryl was never who he thought she was, prompting the sad self-realization that it's always hardest to see into the hearts of the ones we hold dearest. Another fine entry in a series that remains one of the mystery genre's gold standards. Copyright 2014 Booklist Reviews.

The latest in Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Bill Pronzini's acclaimed Nameless Detective Series -- Strangers. Cody Hatcher is the kind of teenager you don't want your kids hanging with. That's the book on him and it's why the citizens of Mineral Springs have no problem at all believing that he's guilty of three rapes. His mother, Cheryl, an old lover of Nameless's, is also being harassed by vindictive townspeople. It's against such odds that he must work to prove Cody innocent. There are few to help him and plenty to get in his way. It's a classic situation for an iconic private investigator.
