Review by Library Journal Review

Starred Review. Knitwear designer Lavold (Viking Patterns for Knitting) is known for her contemporary interpretations of classic Scandinavian cabled motifs. In this volume, she provides extensive artistic and historical context for her designs, giving examples of a variety of interlaced motifs in global artwork. The motifs are divided into loose groupings based on shape or design (e.g., loops, rings and chains, braiding), and a variety of swatches, along with corresponding charts, are provided in each section. Each segment also includes several patterns featuring interlaced motifs-generally sweaters, but Lavold also branches out into shrugs, skirts, scarves, and small accessories. The directions are thorough and the charts are easy to read, but many of the patterns feature intricate, all-over cable designs, making them most suitable for experienced knitters. VERDICT Reminiscent of Alice Starmore's classic Aran Knitting, Lavold's fascinating exploration of the historical and cultural contexts behind Scandinavian cable knitting traditions is an essential addition to knitting collections.
