Review by Booklist Review

This volume provides more than 300 annotations of core read-aloud books for children from birth to five years old. Though the primary target audience is librarians, this is a resource suitable for educators, child-care providers, and parents. Bailey has subjected each text to a set of rigorous questions to determine its suitability to promote school readiness and lifelong literacy. Each annotation includes a description of the plot and illustration style as well as date information and the location of children's literature reviews. Selected texts are broken into the following categories: primary skills, wordless, rhyming, nursery rhymes, finger plays and action rhymes, board books, and toy and movable books. Some of these categories are not common for collection development at the average school or public library, and this text includes out-of-print resources. With the abundance of collection suggestions available to librarians, this is a supplementary purchase for libraries.--Ranucci, Blaire Copyright 2010 Booklist
