Chris Cavender, pseudonym of mystery author Tim Myers, continues the Pizza Lovers series with an engaging plot focusing on a pizza-making contest. Eleanor Swift and her sister, Maddie, agree to participate in the event, though it is run by Laughing Luigi, a pizza-dough distributor with whom they have run afoul in the past. Still, they are delighted to have the opportunity to stay at the Timber Ridge resort, even though they live right in town, and the prize of $25,000 is enough of a lure for them to close their own restaurant to compete. Then Luigi is found dead, poisoned by a slice of the sisters' pizza. Maddie and Eleanor are not suspects outright, but the police ask for their help in finding the killer. The competition continues, dotted by bribes, secrets, and sabotage. There is plenty for food-mystery fans to like here, including numerous recipes and details about pizza production. Followers of Myers' Donut Shop series, written under his Jessica Beck monicker, will also like this series.--Alessio, Amy Copyright 2010 Booklist

The tasty fifth serving of Cavender's pizza lovers series (after 2012's Rest in Pizza) finds Timber Ridge, N.C., pizzeria owner Eleanor Swift and her sister, Maddy Spencer, competing for the $25,000 prize in a pizza baking contest sponsored by Laughing Luigi, purveyor of frozen pizza dough. Eleanor and Maddy know from past experience they can't trust Luigi, but that grand prize would be just what they need for improvements to their pizzeria, A Slice of Delight. Dream on. Not only does the contest appear to be rigged, but before it's over, Luigi is no longer laughing-he's dead with a slice of the sisters' pizza in his mouth. The murder victim was thoroughly despised by the contestants as well as his employees, but which one committed the crime? Eleanor and Maddy once again join forces with police chief Kevin Hurley to find out. This is another fun pizza romp, but it could use a little more meat. (Jan.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. Two sisters get into trouble when the pizza-making contest they're involved in leads to murder. Pizza-maker Eleanor Swift isn't expecting much--much good, that is--when Laughing Luigi asks to meet with her at her shop, A Slice of Delight. The unpleasant mogul of frozen dough has had run-ins with Eleanor and her sister Maddy in the past, but his pitch this time may work to the sisters' advantage. Luigi plans to hold a contest of pizza makers in Timber Ridge, and he offers Eleanor and Maddy the last slot in his competition. The other three teams of cooks are a mix of friendly allies and fearsome competitors, all with their eyes on the $25,000 prize. When Luigi (nee the ethnically challenged George Vincent) is murdered halfway through the battle, Eleanor and Maddy resolve to find out who had a motive to off the moneyed mogul or who hadn't. Instead of trying to deter them, local police chief Kevin Hurley surprisingly spurs them on, suggesting that they may have a unique ability to probe the other contestants without rousing suspicion. And the girls know they have not only the law, but their guys-- Maddy's fiance, Bob, and David, whom Eleanor's finally learning to trust--on their side. A bit more abrupt in its pacing than Cavender's usual (Rest in Pizza, 2012, etc.), but that just proves that it's good to get to the point.
