Presenting the story of Sleeping Beauty, this lovely picture book sticks pretty closely to Briar Rose, the Grimm brothers' version of the traditional fairy tale. A frog tells a childless queen that she will bear a daughter. At the girl's christening, an uninvited fairy utters a death curse, which another fairy amends. As foretold, at age 15, the princess pricks her finger on a spindle and sleeps for 100 years, along with everyone in the castle, which is soon protected by a lethal, thorny hedge. After 100 years, a prince finds the now-flowering hedge, which opens to let him pass. He awakens Sleeping Beauty with a kiss, and the court celebrates their wedding. Though the translator is not credited, the graceful text reads aloud well. Dusikova's delicate line-and-watercolor illustrations capture the drama and mystery of the tale, while portraying the characters with individuality and including details for children to discover. A new edition of an old tale that is familiar, yet strange, and strangely powerful.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2010 Booklist

Gr 2-4-This classic tale stays true to the original telling but the addition of Dusikova's illustrations breathes new life into the timeless story. Soft watercolors illustrate a darkened tower, a thorny hedge, and a cutaway palace with an innocence that will appeal to old and young. The depiction of enchanting animals throughout increases the story's charm. A lovely addition to collections looking for artistic renderings of the classics.-C. J. This serviceable picture-book adaptation of the fairy tale is paired with romantic watercolor illustrations. The retold text is standard fare though it is faithful to the Grimms' version; much of the menace of the words is softened by Dusmkova's soft, pastoral art in which Sleeping Beauty looks like the teenager she is. "Once upon a time, a king and a queen used to say to each other every day, If only we could have a child!' " Readers will eagerly embrace this sparkling retelling of the classic tale, which comes to life through delicate, ethereal illustrations by renowned Czech illustrator Duskov. Soft-focused pictures, reminiscent of the work of Lisbeth Zwerger, glow in a rosy palette as they depict the king and queen blessed with a sweet princess who is cursed by a vengeful and forgotten fairy. Straightforward text with just the right amount of detail gracefully presents the story as the illustrations follow closely along, bursting into bloom as the appropriate prince arrives to greet the sleeping princess with his kiss. Readers interested in the history of the tale will have to look elsewhere, but fans of fairy tales and princesses will happily lose themselves in the subtle details and dreamlike quality of the pictures; replete with sprightly courtiers, evocative stone stairways and turrets, sumptuous fabrics and lively animals, this luminous fairy-tale world radiates warmth and magicand, naturally, provides a very happy ending. A fine choice for princess lovers and traditionalists. (Picture book/fairy tale. 6-10)]] Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
