Patterned after North and Hall's Because You Are My Baby (2008) and Because I Am Your Daddy (2010), this adoration-soaked tribute pairs sometimes forcibly rhymed couplets If we had a river raft, we would tour the Amazon / And listen as the howler monkeys growl their spooky song to big, simply drawn views of a teacher leading a multicultural class of four on imagined field trips over the ocean, to each continent, and then into orbit for a gander at our planet. As the children observe an Antarctic penguin feeding its chick a whole (rather than regurgitated) fish and sight blue whales that look more like sperm whales in the illustrations, strict factual accuracy takes a backseat to broad sentiment. None would argue that the sentiment is inappropriate or undeserved, though, and at least the earth's continents and oceans are all specifically named (if not located on a map) in an inconspicuous note.--Peters, John Copyright 2010 Booklist

K-Gr 2-A teacher leads her students on an imaginative trip around the world: "If we had a schooner, we would have our class at sea/And study the Atlantic, where the great blue whales roam free." They tour the Amazon in a raft, view China's Great Wall from a hot-air balloon, and survey Australia's outback on hang gliders. Their creative land, sea, and air adventures also take them across the African savanna in an off-road truck, through Venice in a gondola, and into space in a rocket ship. The students recognize that "Our classroom is our vessel/always headed someplace new." Hall's watercolor illustrations capture the variety of locales, from sun-drenched deserts to cool-blue oceans. As in Because You Are My Baby (2008) and Because I Am Your Daddy (2010, both Abrams), the momentum is driven by the rhyming verse. Although the scansion occasionally falters ("If we had sleek ski gear, we would cross Antarctic fields/To find the spot where penguin chicks are eating their first meals"), children will be interested in the different modes of transportation and out-of-the-ordinary sights.-Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada (c) Copyright 2012. North and Hall pair up for another imaginative what-if offering (Because I Am Your Daddy, 2010, etc.), this time introducing young readers to different modes of transportation. A tiny (four-student) multicultural class armchair-journeys with their teacher: "If we had a chopper, we would soar above the cone / of a rumbling volcano as it churns out liquid stone." Camels would allow the students to see the Egyptian pyramids, and an airboat would be the perfect way to see the Everglades. But this class isn't afraid to use their own muscles--cross-country skiing in Antarctica, hang gliding in the Outback and kayaking the Grand Canyon. Among others, the adventures include hot air ballooning over China's Great Wall, seeing Venice by gondola and blasting off in a rocket ship into space. North sticks to the format of the two previous titles, missing the rhythm and rhyme in only a few spots. But she neglects the perfect opportunity to plug reading as the way to see the world, instead ending with, "Our classroom is our vessel, / always headed someplace new. // Because you are our teacher, / We'll see the world with you." Hall's watercolors capture the essential elements of each destination, colors, textures and movement matching the natural world, and a comical mouse that appears in each illustration gives readers something to search for. A sweet sentiment and a great way to get kids pumped about school and learning--Miss Frizzle would be proud. (Picture book. 4-7)]] Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
