As the Onion has proven over and over again, perfectly timed, lightly applied touches of profanity are funny. Super funny. It's especially the case when the profanity puts words to common feelings that we aren't really allowed to own up to. Well, in that spirit comes this perfect little picture-book parody. Each spread's rhymed quatrain starts out with a typical bedtime soother. The eagles who soar through the sky are at rest / And the creatures who crawl, run, and creep. But the second half speaks the thoughts of all sleep-zombified parents everywhere. I know you're not thirsty. That's bullshit. Stop Lying. / Lie the fuck down, my darling, and sleep. The artwork also nails the ubiquitous, saccharine-sweet watercolor look that somebody decided kids just can't live without wee babes looking innocently up at you from pastoral landscapes as they plot new ways to lay ruin to your REM. The best part? It only takes a mere one of this book to counterbalance the miles of bookshelf space devoted to candy-coated bedtime rhymes. That's good bang for your buck, but just be ready to hightail it across the room when you spy your little one's hands cracking open this innocuous-looking book. Or, at least, be prepared to tell eyebrow-raising visitors that's what you do.--Chipman, Ia. Copyright 2010 Booklist
