Review by Booklist Review
*Starred Review* The names trip seductively off the tongue: Gansey, Eriskay, Sanquhar. Yet these two dozen-plus socks, lovingly re-created for contemporary knitters from the archives of the British Isles, demand quite a bit of technical expertise of a knitter. Though Weston (Country Weekend Knits, 2008) glosses over the difficulties, be prepared to display mastery of cable and lace stitches, of intarsia and Fair Isle and multicolor knitting as well as the working of small-size, double-pointed needles. Even for the novice, the patterns, all illustrated by many color photographs, are drool-worthy: cable and seed-stitch denim socks, kilt hose, Sasha Kagan's intarsia flower socks, and Argyle over-the-knee socks. For every one, as is to be expected, details including the necessary yarn (usually by brand name), materials, measurements, gauge, finishing, excellent step-by-step directions, and graphs (when needed) are provided. At the end is a round-up of technical need-to-knows, but there are no how-tos for beginners.--Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2010 Booklist
