Higher! Higher! ¡Más alto! ¡Más alto!

Leslie Patricelli

Book - 2011

One child. One swing. An obliging dad. The inevitable plea to go "Higher! Higher!" Add Leslie Patricelli's wildly expressive illustrations, and an everyday pastime reaches new heights of humor and whimsy. How high can it go? Higher than a giraffe? Taller than a mountain? Is Earth the final frontier? The creator of a popular series of board books rises to the occasion with an ingenious picture book of very few words that expresses the giddy glee of being pushed in a swing.

PreS-Gr 1-A girl enjoys being pushed on a swing by her dad. The higher she goes, the more imaginative she becomes. "Higher! Higher!/Mas alto! Mas alto!" becomes her mantra as she flies past tall buildings, skims past mountain peaks, and catapults into space. As she swings back down to Earth, she arrives safely into her father's arms, asking to do it all over again. Patricelli's simple, bold lines and bright, saturated colors convey the excitement the child's experience. The side-by-side English and Spanish text is perfect for reading aloud although the illustrations really do the talking and make viewers soar.-Shannon Dye, Peoria Public Library, AZ (c) Copyright 2011. In Birthday, a baby plays with a box in imaginative ways. In Higher! Higher!, a girl swings so high she meets a space alien. The only part of the books that's not a direct translation from the original edition is in Higher! Higher!: the girl says, "High five!" and the alien responds "!Amigos!" Young children will surely enjoy these colorful bilingual board books. [Review covers these titles: The Birthday Box / Mi caja de cumpleaqos and Higher! Higher! / !Mas alto! !Mas alto!] (c) Copyright 2011. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
