Phifer (environmental design, New York U.), an architect who served on the Art Commission of the City of New York, takes readers on a tour of 242 works of public art in all five boroughs of New York City, from the Statue of Liberty to Times Square advertising to the 9/11 memorial. Organized by neighborhood, traditional and contemporary works such as outdoor sculptures, murals, art in lobbies accessible to the public, public plazas and landscapes, and artistic sidewalks and lighting are included, all of which are free to view. Along with descriptions and locations, color photos of the pieces by architectural photographer Dzikowski are provided, as are maps. Art in public schools, subways, and temporary sculptures are excluded. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
