Colombia's sordid underworld of drugs and violence has spawned a host of movies, books, and TV series, but they rarely explore the role of women. (A famous exception is Gustavo Bolivar Moreno's Sin tetas no hay paraiso, the basis of a Colombian television series, but that book is disappointing and reeks of opportunism.) Based on the TV series Las munecas de la Mafia ("Mafia Dolls"), and cowritten by Lopez Lopez, a former drug dealer, this book chronicles the real lives of six trophy women of big narcos in the southern region of Valle del Cauca. These women indulged in all kinds of luxuries. When Brenda's love, the powerful capo Rasguno, was arrested in Cuba, she sought help from soccer star Diego Maradona, a friend of Fidel Castro. Though the player splurged on her, he passed up the opportunity to help her bail out her husband. Renata, who worked in New York City as an "accountant" (literally counting millions of dollars from the drug trade), hired a hit man to go after her husband's mistress. Frida adopted a chimpanzee whom she dressed in children's clothes and took to the dentist. Never condescending or condemning, this book is a sobering account of shattered lives yet is at times surprisingly entertaining and funny. Recommended for public and academic libraries, as well as all bookstores.-Carlos Rodriguez Martorell, East Elmhurst, NY Copyright 2009 Reed Business Information.

During their time of glory, paraded at their husband’s side, they travel in opulent vehicles decked out in the latest designer fashions and live in the lap of luxury. It just takes one second, one false move, however, and their entire life come crashing down on them. Their man loses power, money and his freedom, and suddenly their golden dream turns into their darkest nightmare. Glamour and an affluent lifestyle give way to uncertainty, unease, and an inability to go back to a “normal” life.Las Fantásticas were always the “official” women. They were owed respect and subservience. They ruled the house, presiding over an army of servants that saw them as an extension of the boss. Never before had anyone told their story, had delved into their metamorphosis —from simple, unassuming women into the partner of recognized criminals. Las Fantásticas are beautiful women whose true nature is veiled under a sweet and innocent guise. Upon seducing their “lord,” a race against the clock begins —each will do whatever it takes to maintain their place in power. • Never before has such an intimate portrayal of these women been available to the public.
