Review by Booklist Review

Gr. 2^-3. There is an ethnocentric tone to this Faces and Places series and a condescending sense of normal us and exotic them ("instead of using forks, people eat with special sticks called chopsticks"). The book on South Africa in the same series is not recommended: it is inaccurate, not only with misspellings but also with out-of-date facts about "homelands" and tribes and a patronizing text ("And some cities have parks and fountains, too!"). The books on China and Japan are better and will be useful as first introductions. The full-color photos are informative and lively, and children will find out some basic facts about the geography, history, people, and customs of each country. --Hazel Rochman
