PreS-Gr 2-These titles offer little new information, relying on crisp, colorful photographs to carry readers through to the last pages. The strongest of the three, Wild Animals, does a fair job at identifying animals whose names start with the letters of the alphabet, with the exception of sea urchins for the letter "u," and a fox for the letter "x." Simple statements offer basic factual information or merely describe what the animal is doing in the photograph. Desert offers more of the same, mixing animals with plant life and descriptions of objects found in a desert. Dogs, the weakest of the three, stretches the format with examples such as "S is for sick. Dogs get sick just like people do." Most libraries will want to forget these ABCs.-Lisa Gangemi Kropp, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Close-up photographs vividly depict what each letter of the alphabet is for: ""C is for catch,"" for example, shows a border collie in full flight catching a Frisbee. The words fit the letters well and repeat their sounds, and three or four more sentences flesh out the information about dogs and their lives. This is a fine ABC book for new readers, with highly engaging illustrations. Reading list. Glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
