Trodding the familiar terrain of the western romance with practiced skill, veteran novelist Dailey returns again to the Calder clan and its Triple C Montana ranch. Ty Calder has recovered from the kidnap/shooting that ended Calder Pride, and he and Jessy are joyfully expecting twins. Jessy, a cowhand's daughter, grew up on the ranch and shares a love for the land with Ty and Ty's father, Chase. The one obstacle to the family's continued prosperity is a 10,000-acre parcel of government land that lies within the ranch boundaries; negotiations for clear title are stalled in political wrangling between cattlemen and environmentalists. Jessy's nemesis is Tara, the glamorous daughter of rich industrialist E.J. Dyson, who was Ty's first wife. When Dyson suffers a fatal heart attack, a distraught Tara begs Cat, Ty's sister, who was once close to her, and Ty himself, to attend the Texas funeral. Reluctantly, Ty goes and falls victim to Tara's machinations to recapture his love machinations that include Tara wangling herself an invitation to visit the ranch. Meanwhile, Jessy's twins are born, ex-convict Buck Haskell (once Chase's best friend) reappears and tensions build between Ty and Jessy he resents cowhand Ballard's attentions to Jessy; she distrusts Tara. Tara's continued presence in their lives is the source of rumors and suspicions culminating in tragedy and great opportunities for a sequel. While some characters are stereotypes, the villain is well disguised and Jessy is a strong role model for readers. After a slow scene-setting start, Dailey turns out a page-turner. Jessy Nile Calder's happiness is complete: she can count marriage to Ty, the man she loves; a large extended family; a successful ranch to help run; and twins on the way. But a shadow falls on her perfect bliss when Tara, Ty's unscrupulous ex-wife, comes back to Montana and the Triple C with marriage on her mind-that is, remarriage to Ty. Suspicion, dissension, and jealousy run rampant as Tara's schemes not only do their damage to Jessy and Ty's marriage but threaten the Calder empire as well. Passion, vengeance, and an unexpected danger from the past add to the mix in a story that, while bittersweet and slightly melodramatic, continues the ongoing Calder saga in fine style. Calder fans will be waiting. Dailey (A Capital Holiday) is noted for her many contemporary romances. She lives in Branson, MO. (c) Copyright 2010. Meanwhile, back at the ranch. . . . . . . at the Triple-C (as in Calder) ranch, that is, since that's where things are always happening. Now, just as rugged Ty Calder is recovering from a shootout, his wife Jessy is expecting twins. And Tara Dyson Calder, Ty's ex, is piqued. The spoiled daughter of strip-mining magnate E.J. Dyson can't understand what Ty sees in honey-haired and lissome Jessy. Why, she's only the daughter of a ranch-hand and even has a faint wrinkle or two under that golden tan. Tara and Ty have been divorced for six years, but that was his idea, not hers. She's ready to weasel her way back into his heart, beginning with a grandiose scheme to build a cattle-auction barn to end all cattle-auction barns. Noah Richardson, "the current wunderkind of the architectural world," has been handsomely paid to tackle the project and swoops down with Tara in a private jet to meet and greet the taciturn Calders. Talking a mile a minute, showering Jessy with expensive baby gifts, Tara simply will not take no for an answer and thus is reluctantly invited to stay at the Triple-C. But her scheming is all too obvious. She must be involved somehow in the Calders' loss of a grazing lease for thousands of acres of rich pastureland. Or could her brawny henchman Buck be the culprit? Hands are stuck into the pockets of weathered jeans, and there are manly mutterings and veiled threats aplenty. But Jessy stands by her man and the Calder heritage . . . until the tyrannical Tara is bested at last. Dailey serves up another oater in the tradition of Calder Pride (1999), etc., getting the ranch details right and neatly tying up the loose ends of a sprawling plot. More to come? Undoubtedly.
