Ages 5-7. Spud Jenkins and Joe Turner, cutups extraordinaire, are on the loose and headed for summer camp ("That camp will never be the same," says Spud's mom). Everything looks great, until they find out the camp director is none other than their principal, Mr. Spurgle, who is hip to their tricks. Moreover, the unhappy campers are forced to deal with Spurgle's conniving, stuffed-shirt nephew, Charles Andrew Frothingham. He successfully gets the innocent cutups blamed for several mysterious pranks, but then Spud and Joe turn detective and get the goods on both Frothingham and Spurgle. Marshall's story, though slightly mechanical, still places a high premium on fun. The accompanying cartoon drawings are signature Marshall, which is to say the ludicrous prevails, even if the lines are quite familiar. --Denise Wilms
